Market Square Eyes

Poem by George Duric-Last - Photograph by Ally Bain

You know
A stare is as good as a nod
And a smile to a blind old horse.
Lay on this bed of concrete Kissed by hail and snow,
And you will see what I once saw.

The jingle of precious copper,
Tarnished silver that rain down
From pitiful drought.
Place your ear to stone pillow and hear
The thunder of footsteps
That never came.
Sounds that soothe
Just as they curse a man
Who pays but still cannot.

Take the moment
And the discomfort
To look at a beast
And remind him he still breathes.
Tap into that dormant spirit
And retell tales of mistakes and misfortune
So you may bear none.
Let a brief gaze be the sweet dagger
That lets a man know;
He is nothing and no more
Or less than the beast he sees
Looking back at him.
