Signs of Life

Shades of Shadow

I cannot remember the last time I saw the sea...
Was it before my thirtieth?
Or was it before my toddler took first breath?
It seems so long ago, I do not know,
All I know is that seeing such homely beauty
Came before the arrival of the shadow.

It lingered inside my body,
Blanketing the glow of my organs,
Which began to tire of their daily routine.
Colonies of crawlers deep within me,
Spinning webs among the poisonous weeds
That absorb the moisture of my soul.

Will I be reminded of the cold,
That I have felt for so long,
If I dip my toes into the still water?
Suddenly it feels, as if, a serene warmth,
That awakens nerves long numb,
When this helpless body
Touches the waters of life.

All these soothsayers, with their pins,
Poke and scan every inch of what I was,
Banishes my soul away to bliss;
Silent ignorance in empty boats,
That drift on a suspended lake;
And readies my bones to hold again,
My brain to remember again;
To bring light to where the shadows came.

As I stare out at the far horizon,
That ripples with life,
I think about the shadow that took time away,
Yet I spread my arms,
And wait for the sun to rise.
