Signs of Life

In My Time of Dying

Poem by George Duric-Last - Photograph by Ally Bain

In my time of dying,
I want nobody to mourn.
All I want for you to do
Is take my body home,
So I can die easy.

I had seen the silent killer;
A silhouette upon the curtains.
He visited me in brief, frightening episodes,
All of which went unchartered.
It was at night that he got me,
I never woke.

The man in white woke me
In his sanctuary of victims to this godless entity,
But it was not me he woke, not entirely,
Rather a fragmented portrait of what had been,
With none of its vital characteristics.
And like that, it would die.

This man in a cloak of snow,
Who filled the hallways with light,
Allowed this inanimate pile of limbs
To gaze on those it once knew and loved.
His ladies of death ease the final transition
With their soft tubes and sweet nectar flowing,
So it can die easy.

In my time of dying,
There is no pain, no emotion,
No words just moments,
Moments that comfortably drift by
Until this old body can be taken
As my soul rests beyond the sky.
