Signs of Life

When The Wind Blows

The Sun struggles
To pierce through the steel sheet
That is the darkening skies.
The dancing of the wild grass becomes more rapid,
Each petal is separated from their brothers
Of seasons gone. Flocks are divided
And pushed astray;
A storm is coming in the break of day.

As the wind howls its way
Across the empty lands; it funnels through
Fragile shelters, beckoning the warmth hither.
The biting cold, like gusts of arctic wolves
That tear through the fibres of bliss
And unwraps the shroud of forgotten shadows.

Why do you come, O lonesome chill?
Channelling your breeze upon temperance
Upon mortal shell;
With a sea dried to sand.
Bringing with it, the ephemeral fragments
By day, of a life once loved; images
That colour the nightmares in the stillness of dark.

The mighty elements that cause such pain,
Compelling veiled flesh to succumb
To winter's rage.
A frozen exhaled sigh
Turns and curses its parent warmth
For the abrupt eviction into unforgiving light.

Embers of the heart calm themselves
And make peace with the dead bark,
As the leaves pass by, forgiveness is asked
From fleeting faces loved, scorned, hurt,
Fluctuating images of friends and foes,
Until the tree is laid bare
When the wind blows.
